OUTSIDE LEARNING

Learning Outside of The Classroom

In my free time I read style blogs to stay updated about what is on trend. I also am inspired by art, so I frequently visit The Huntington Library, art collections and botanical gardens. In my free time I practice sketching.

Fashion Nova Summer 18'

THE FASHION NOVA EXPERIENCE

On my first week, I learned how to submit a purchase order using the Oracle Netsuite system to submit reorders for styles. This is similar to the knowledge I gained in AMM 481, where I learned AIMS. Also, I learned how to more effectively utilize excel and Google Sheets in order to transfer information back and forth, which helped with my ability to effectively communicate. I was also taught how to use Spotify for website merchandising. This showed me how to merchandise styles on the site by color or theme, which helped improve my visual merchandising skills.
My second week I learned the importance of proper email etiquette. I sent many emails to vendors for the buying team. In the AMM program, we learned the importance of proper etiquette in AMM 342 and this experience is helping me understand this. I also practiced excel skills in updating documents as well as helping on a big project to secure exclusive styles for Fashion Nova.
My third week, I learned how to write hand written POs for new styles. I practiced retail math calculations with cut ratios for styles as well. This helped me utilized retail math skills I learned in my AMM course work.
My fourth week, I attended my first vendor meeting with the buying team, which taught ne about vender/buyer interactions. AMM341 stressed the importance of networking for a career. I also had a one on one lunch with my associate buyer mentor about our careers. This lunch helped be better understand the amount of hard work that goes in to building a career in the fashion industry.
My fifth week, I filled in for an assistant buyer. I learned how to be more organized and efficient. Also, I learned how to better service vendors by learning how to update breakdowns for orders and how to split POs in Netsuite. I practiced writing POs for new styles and adding the attributes that help buyers find out what styles sell best. Filling in as an assistant buyer helped me see the amount work that goes into being in that position.
